The natural world around us is disappearing faster every day. Deforestation, the extinction of animals and insects, global drought, the acidification of the oceans, and the increase in global diseases are a direct result of climate change. Climate change and the issues that come with it will be a test for humanity’s ingenuity and resolve. We are already going down the path of no return, and we must prepare for the future while stymying the impact of fossil fuel emissions on the atmosphere today. As of now we only have one planet, one home, and it is imperative we treat her with respect.
- Clean Air, Clean Water, and Climate Justice for All. The Trump administration has rolled back federal protections that ensure clean air and water for Americans. More than 1.8 million Latinos live in areas with high levels of air pollutants from coal-fired plants. Trump’s attack on fresh air and water is an insult to these vulnerable communities. I will fight for them, and we as New Mexicans will lead the nation for climate justice for all people.
- Incentivize Investment in Renewable Energies. The United States subsidies up to $20 billion for fossil fuel exploration and production. Additionally, health damage caused by coal costs the United States $500 billion per year. Renewable energies do not produce the same health repercussions as oil and gas, plus they do not contribute to climate change. We need to create a manufacturing economy centered on renewable energy ports and systems. Let’s build our economy by not only producing clean energy but also creating a manufacturing industry that makes wind turbine blades and parts for solar panels.
- Hold Corporations Accountable for Oil Spills and Clean Up. Over the last 50 years, more than 12 million gallons of oil spilled in the Gulf of Mexico, not including the Deepwater Horizon spill of 200 million gallons. Pipelines like the Dakota Access Pipeline jeopardize water and land rights for Native Americans and other people who live along the proposed paths. We should not prioritize oil production over the health and safety of the American people.
