DACA recipients are helping build a better America by studying, working, paying taxes, and contributing roughly $25 billion to social programs that they cannot access, like Social Security and Medicare. DACA recipients are achievers, and it’s unfair to punish them for decisions that were made for them. I am proud to support the protection of their status and the creation of a legal pathway to citizenship. We must reform the work visa system and create a system that allows fully documented immigrants to fill our labor shortages. We should identify and support hardworking immigrants who want to work, pay taxes and contribute to our economy. Simultaneously, we also need to ensure that we keep our communities safe and, thus, I support the deportation of dangerous criminals and individuals who pose a serious threat to our communities.
What can we do about it?
- Support DREAMers by Advocating for Bipartisan Bills such as the USA Act. Every candidate claims that they will support DREAMers and that only they have the answer for the current immigration issue, but they fail to mention that there is already an immigration bill that has broad support in the House of Representatives. I will continue Congresswoman Lujan- Grisham’s efforts to pass this bipartisan immigration bill. Every day we wait more DREAMers face deportation, this is unacceptable, and we need to end the partisan gridlock.
- Reform the Work Visa System. Immigrant workers should be able to work in the United States lawfully. Not every worker wants to immigrate, and many works here while sending their salaries back home for their families. The government needs to be able to tax this labor, but also make it easier for migrant workers to receive and maintain a work permit.
- Implement 21st Century Border Security. We must secure our borders and open the gates of opportunity. Not the wall but the high-tech thermal imagery and drone systems. We have to keep our borders secure while ensuring that we have human dignity and respect.
- Cooperate with our Friends and Allies in Central America. We need to strengthen citizen security, the rule of law, and economic prosperity in Central America. People are fleeing their home countries because of crime and government corruption; we can change this. Lifting the world out of poverty and reducing corruption is the only way to create beneficial conditions for America and our global friends.
